THE LATEST IN RADICAL MUSICAL CULTURE
Rashanim, an ensemble dedicated to the exploration of Jewish, Middle Eastern and improvised music, performs as part of Makor’s “Beyond Jazz” evening. Founded in 2000 by guitarist Jon Madof, the trio — Shanir Ezra Blumenkranz on bass and Mathias Kunzli on drums and percussion — released its debut CD in April on John Zorn’s Tzadik Records. Rashanim’s varied influences include klezmer, Turkish classical music, sacred Jewish melodies and the music of the late “downtown” saxophonist and composer Thomas Chapin. The group’s performance is preceded by award-winning drummer-composer Darren Lyons and his acoustic quartet, and composer and saxophone-flute player Jessica Lurie and the trio Living Daylights. Also in the lineup is the Lemon Juice Quartet, which blends jazz, rock, funk, be-bop, Afro-Cuban, ethnic and experimental music.
Makor, 35 W. 67th St.; Lyons 7 p.m., Lurie 8 p.m., Rashanim 9:30 p.m., Lemon Juice Quartet 10:30 p.m.; $12. (212-601-1000 or www.makor.org)

This is a moment of great uncertainty for the news media, for the Jewish people, and for our sacred democracy. It is a time of confusion and declining trust in public institutions. An era in which we need humans to report facts, conduct investigations that hold power to account, tell stories that matter and share honest discourse on all that divides us.
With no paywall or subscriptions, the Forward is entirely supported by readers like you. Every dollar you give this Passover is invested in the future of the Forward — and telling the American Jewish story fully and fairly.
The Forward doesn’t rely on funding from institutions like governments or your local Jewish federation. There are thousands of readers like you who give us $18 or $36 or $100 each month or year.
