A MOTHER’S TALE
Risa Jaroslow & Dancers, which uses dance to speak to people’s life experiences, performs “Strings Attached” in collaboration with Obie Award-winning composer Deidre Murray. The troupe’s five dancers explore the world of female string players in professional orchestras and the progress they’ve made since the 1960s, when women were first permitted to perform in the field. Jaroslow, who was inspired to create “Strings” by her mother’s stories about being a concert cellist, based the performance’s themes on interviews with several female composers and musicians. The set, by Perry Gunther, comprises a series of strings fastened vertically on stage that the dancers use to produce sound. Live harp, violin, viola and cello are integrated into the performance. Also performing is Heidi Latsky Dance. Latsky and her nine dancers perform works that reflect on the embodiment of fear and the release from it. “What Would You Have Done,” a Latsky solo, was inspired by Bernhard Schlink’s “The Reader.”
