Jewish Agency Gives Boardroom Clout to Ally of Evangelicals

About a decade ago, the head of the Jewish Agency for Israel refused to be photographed taking a check from Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein, founder and president of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews. This past week, the agency accepted a hefty donation from the evangelical-backed organization and offered Eckstein a seat on two of its most powerful committees.

GAINING GROUND: Eckstein, pictured giving an educational lecture, will become a voting member of the executive board, and will gain seats on budget and finance committees.

Eckstein’s organization and the Jewish Agency, which helped found the State of Israel, announced that IFCJ would donate $45 million to the agency over the next three years, almost all of it raised from evangelical Christians in North America. As part of the agreement, IFCJ will be declared a funding partner of the Jewish Agency. Eckstein will also receive new voting powers that will include spots on the committees that oversee the agency’s budget and that meet with the prime minister and his Cabinet.

“For the first time, Christians, who are mainly my constituency, will have a seat at the table,” Eckstein told the Forward.

The moves underscore the astonishing speed with which IFCJ and the evangelical movement in general have grown in stature as supporters of Israel. Even 10 years ago, Eckstein was shunned not only by Jewish Agency head Avraham Burg but also by many American donors.

Some Jewish leaders remain uneasy about allying themselves with evangelicals. But the support, both political and financial, seems to have proved irresistible.

As part of the agreement, which still must be approved by the Jewish Agency’s board, IFCJ will donate $15 million a year to the Jewish Agency’s core budget for immigration and resettlement, historically IFCJ priorities. This is nearly double IFCJ’s donation of $8 million last year. The IFCJ will also be described as one of the Jewish Agency’s funding partners, a status previously shared only by United Jewish Communities, the umbrella organization for American federations, and Keren Hayesod, which represents international federations. Eckstein will also become a voting member of the executive board and will gain seats on the budget and finance committee, which makes recommendations for how the Jewish Agency allocates its funds, and the coordinating committee, which meets with the prime minister and Cabinet members. Eckstein had previously been a nonvoting member of the executive board. Both Eckstein and a Jewish Agency representative stressed that Eckstein would continue to be IFCJ’s representative on the board.

“It’s not like all of a sudden you’re going to have Pat Robertson on the committee,” Eckstein joked.

Traditionally, UJC and Keren Hayesod have supported the Jewish Agency, but support from both has been stagnant. The 2008 budget of the Jewish Agency shows a contribution of $138 million from UJC, down from $140 million the year before, and $44 million from Keren Hayesod, up slightly from $42 million the previous year. Despite contributions from Israeli philanthropists, the flat level of allocations — combined with a weakening American dollar and reduced grants from the American government — has created a looming budget crunch at the Jewish Agency.

Meanwhile, IFCJ has become an increasingly important funding partner. Funneling its contributions through Keren Hayesod, IFCJ gave $8 million to the Jewish Agency last year. Eckstein has held one of Keren Hayesod’s board seats since 2001. He is currently a nonvoting member of the executive board and has participated in committee meetings.

With a decline in funding allocations to Israel from American Jews, and studies showing declining emotional attachment as well, donations and political support from evangelical Christians have become essential to Israel.

“I think we accept, with reservations, the political involvement of the evangelical community on behalf of Israel,” said Jewish Agency board member Richard Wexler, chairman of the United Israel Appeal. “It would be rather cynical, having accepted the political help, to reject the financial assistance which has become more and more vital given the reduction in allocations and financial distributions from the federation system in America.”

Actually, this could be a good way for Jews to keep Evangelicals under control. That is, if we keep our heads on straight. On the other hand, this could give too much credibility to the haredi, because the evangelicals are of the same mentality and the two will clash on the details but mesh, emotionally. Good point that the withdrawal of toursim by Jews has brought this on. Problem: Israel's economy. Israel shouldn't need this. But I think, distasteful as it is, Eckstein's been very smart. If we don't get these Evangelicals where we can see them, they just might resort to the tactics of the olden days. Let's keep them happy so they won't try to rush us into the "end times."

I respond here as a Christian who does NOT support Zionism. I do believe our faiths should respect each however, the term Christian-Zionist is theological error and you should not be lead to believe all Christians hold to these erroneous beliefs. You have indeed sold your souls and have offered up 'strange fire' by accepting money from (duped) Christians. As you well know, it has happened many a time (especially in OT scripture) For those of you interested in what the Reformed Presbyterian (Calvinistic) position is regarding who's land it is, chosen people of God, 'bless those that bless thee,' etc.. etc.. I suggest you read our Open Letter which deals with these exact topics. I also would be willing to respond to your questoins.. cdelz3@cfl.rr.com Find it here - http://www.knoxseminary.org/Prospective/Faculty/WittenbergDoor/

I'd like to know what some of the people making ingrateful commets are doing to help the poor in Israel and foriegn nations who hate Jews. Rabbi Eckstien and other Jewish/Christian groups are for you don't you understand? They are rescuing Jews from nations whom persecute them. Operations like this take alot of money. So not every evangelical is against you and many keep Torah. I do understand your suspician belief differences, but you need to know who is for you and who is against you instead of labeling every Christian as negative. Groups like ours will still love and support you even though your comments hurt.

Regarding "ungrateful comments" by Yochanon..firstly a "christian" who is sincere would not seek "recognition of efforts made" and we all can still speak freely in this country so I welcome any comment by anyone; if it's of their own free will. To remind Jews that there are countries that hate Jews is to inflate hate, it almost condones that kind of hatred. I would prefer to help anyone Jew or not as a Christian; regardless of race, color, faith, creed, even politics; these considerations should never be a point of consideration but that's me, of course. You can decide to help anyone you desire for whatever reason but let's keep Christ out of it, OK? How far have we come? We still trade food for converting to christianity, submission for money and "we'll help but you gotta do this one thing for us". When you give from your heart; you don't keep record and you don't expect anything in return...not even recognition of efforts made.

Jed Sun. Dec 30, 2007

S. Rutberg said "...sorry, my Israeli contribution days are over. My money stays in the US." S. and anyone else who feels that way: there are many, many ways to help Israel besides the JA. www.LemaanAchai.org is one example of an organization that has won awards for its self-less community work. www.YadSarah.org has also been recognized internationally for its trend setting work with the elderly. Both organizations provide tax free deductions in the US, the UK and elsewhere. Jed.

Angela Mon. Dec 31, 2007

Great article Anthony Weiss; Thank you. In risking clarity regarding Rutberg's comment on the converting of Jews to Christianity is the attempt to do what Hitler almost accomplished;while the world stood and watched. This time our Jewish brothers are willfully participating in the destruction of a faith, a people by the means of submission to power and control through money. To diminish a faith is to diminish a people, no Christian has that right or authority and would be guided by ungodliness. Remember; Christ was a Jew who studied and lived as a Jew and respected Jewish laws that were in accordance with GOD'S WILL; HE never referred to himself as a "Evangelist". I am a "christian" but I'm more a humanitarian with an understanding of scriptures.I invite all Christians to really challenge their ability to be honest with themselves and take personal responsibility for what is occurring in the Holy Land before our own eyes. It may be that the evangelist movement is not "holy" but rather a sinister plot, if exposed, is actually the attempt to gain the Holy Land from Jews; just like the Arabs.I respect an enemy that I can see, smell and hear but the one I'm unaware of is far more deadly. For those of us who see that "Biblical Prophesy" is taking shape; in the Middle East..GOD never asked us to join in the gang banging..we're only expected to worship and spread the NEWS. Jesus was said to have said many things but one that "stays" with me is [what so ever you do to the least of my brother; that you do unto me]

Dave Thu. Dec 27, 2007

Isn't this the Forward? Shouldn't there be howls of outrage? The fact that there isn't shows that the support of the Evangelicals for Israel is a given and is no longer controversial.

Isadora Czynkin Thu. Dec 27, 2007

Dave-- Sorry to disagree, Dave, but it's just one more (good!) reason for American Jews to be disgusted with Israeli policies. I AM outraged, but I am outraged about alot of things. Let the goyim take over the whole place and fight it out with the Haredi black hatters, or let them live happily ever after. May God bless and keep the Evangelicals--far away from us. I don't want my charitable contributions going to Israel, and I don't want my tax dollars going there either.

S. Rutberg Thu. Dec 27, 2007

What hypocrites we have become...we have organizations that fight the Jews For Jesus movements throughout the country, but if evangelicals bring money to the table, then we are willing to sell out our souls...the whole perfpose of the evangelical movement is to convert Jews to Christianity. What has become of us that we are willing to sell our selves...what Hitler could not do with the ovens, we are permitting to happen for money...sorry, my Israeli contribution days are over. My money stays in the US.

Sara Thu. Dec 27, 2007

avramele Thu. Dec 27, 2007

In Brooklyn, back in the day, some pitiful shnook running a small business would get himself in the red and take in some local "wiseguy" as a business partner. Before long the benefactors nephew was in charge of the loading dock and there was a new accountant in the front office. Of course, not to worry, today's Jews are much smarter than that!

DB Fri. Dec 28, 2007

I'm not as outraged as those who've come before me. While Evangelicals come with their specific agenda which I believe is anti-Jewish, money is money. People appointed to the Jewish Agency Board are there because of their connections to money and influence. It's the same with Yechiel Eckstein. It's the "golden rule" -- those with the gold make the rules. Frankly, the influence of the IFCJ would be significantly reduced if the Jewish world (outside of Israel) hadn't dramatically reduced (and now frozen) their allocations to the JA and expected them to perform the same service. So as long as people (Jews) refuse to adequately support Israel -- donations, short and long term visits, actively pursuing a dialogue between Israelis and non-Israeli Jews and strenghtening their Jewish identity -- others will fill the vacuum "on our behalf." We're merely reaping what we have sowed.

Zionist Sun. Dec 30, 2007

Any friend of the Jewish people and Israel is a friend of mine and any enemy of the Jewish people and Israel is an enemy of mine. Christians are not our enemies. Wake-up and see the reality of what's going on in this world. The fact is that many Jews haven't learned anything from the Holocaust. Individuals like Isadora would rather have Israel Arabs, most who support terrorism and the destruction of Israel, than Zionist Christians on the Jewish Agency board is pathetic. The fact is that your hatred of Christians is far more than your concern for Israel and the Jewish people. Chris claims to be a anti-Zionist Chrsitian which is an oxymoron. Real Chrisitans are Zionists because that is the basis of their Bible. If you're not a Zionist than I don't know how you can call yourself a Christian. God is a Zionist!

Isadora Fri. Dec 28, 2007

Israel already has the biggest "shnorrer" economy in the world. DAYENU! We "chutzies" (Jews outside of Israel) have paid the JNF since we were kids to plant environmentally disastrous types of trees, we've supported "making the desert bloom" with water that the region cannot spare (and can only be sustained by seizing control of West Bank acquifers,) we've used our political clout to make Israel into the sixth largest arms dealer in the Middle East and the sixth nuclear power. Meanwhile, what do we have to show for it? The kibbutzim are going private and turning into time shares, apartments being built in Jerusalem are only for multi-millionnaires, and instead of a being haven from anti-Semitism, Israel has become a magnet for it. Economic inequality in Israel is outrageous and getting more so--the richest of the rich are getting richer, while one in four Israelis lives at or below the poverty line. Meanwhile, nearly every Israeli Prime Minister, including the current one, is half a hairbreadth from being impeached on corruption charges. Selling one's soul has become the Israeli way of life. Some return on our investment (moral as well as financial), DB! And yet you say it isn't enough and Evangelical Christians need to make up for what we "stingy" diaspora Jews won't shell out for? Frankly, I would much rather have Israeli Arabs, with or without money, sit on the Board of the Jewish Agency than Evangelical Christians.

Aaron Huber Fri. Dec 28, 2007

Shame on all you commenters. Rabbi Eckstein is funneling this non-jewish money into the right places. Aliyah funding really needs a boost, and this is a great way to accomplish it. Rabbi Eckstein for years has been considered an outsider, but now he is finally being accepted. Why do all of you liberal jews who love to promote interfaith dialouge all of a sudden shun the generous donations of meaningful christians? Jerusalem and Israel is the capital of all three monotheisitc religions. This means that both Jews and Non-Jews should support it. Kol HaKavod Rabbi Eckstein!

yochanon Fri. Dec 28, 2007

Some Christians want to know if you appreciate their support. You should be glad to know that there are (gentiles) that support you in your hours of need. Many Christians do love and support your existance. Without you Christianity would not exist. This is why Rabbi Eckstien supports you. Is there anything wrong with investing and supporting Isreal? Will not Ha Shem rule all nations with Torah and set up His Kingdom. We obey Torah and support you. True worshippers of Him show love and support.

t.hollingsworth Fri. Dec 28, 2007

“I think we accept, with reservations, the political involvement of the evangelical community on behalf of Israel,” said Jewish Agency board member Richard Wexler, chairman of the United Israel Appeal." 45 million dollars have a way of overcoming "reservations." I'm not sure which I hold in greater contempt, Jewish/Christian organizations like IFCJ or the Christian-hating Jewish agencies which receive this Christian largesse.

Angela Mon. Dec 31, 2007

"GOD IS A ZIONIST" is equal to "GOD IS ON OUR SIDE", even better "GOD SPEAKS TO ME and PEOPLE "LIKE ME". These kinds of "beliefs" start wars and contribute to hopelessness that keeps the world from "coming together". They contradict the philosophy of Christianity and derails any opportunity for us to develop as a Human Race. Let us take stock in our words, our thoughts and behave responsibly. We would do well to remember John Lennon's song...Imagine.

Angela Mon. Dec 31, 2007

If you read Rabbi Jason Miller's web site promotion to the unification of Christians and Jews because an offer is on the table meaning that Christians will support Jews in the event of "some threat". The Bush Administration has the market on control based on fear tactic already. And "the enemy" is inferred...folks the enemy is from within and the give away is the use of "fear tactics". For those of you who still read.. go back to the 60's when Israel was and still is a force to contend with. Our Middle East Intelligence is based on Israeli Intel which we depend on secretly because of the BUSH'S CONNECTION to unmentionable Arab States. They warned us about WTC but did we listen? Israeli Forces are up to the challenge with or without our help and we are not the only "powerful" nation on this planet. The danger to Israel is the depletion of support and interest by Jews; who at one time were the world's envy because they helped each other based on faith. We can recall history and learn something from it, even todays Jews who are safe here in the US disrespectfully fail to give credence to traditions that manifested a united front; traditions regarding faith that created Israel in the first place. The plight of the Jews in history can be anyone of us tomorrow, that is why the fate of any people should be all of our concern. No concern should be manifested by fear tactics...it is evident that there is cause for deep evaluation of the conditions and events that effect Israel. The parties who offer assistance and for what purpose. In the end we will all suffer the consequences regardless of the oceans between us.

Warren Mon. Dec 31, 2007

The ever-increasing inter-marriage rate and dominance of Reform movement in US ensures the continued lessening of Israel supporters in this country. Blessed are those who actively work in support of Israel, whatever their particular belief.

Warren Mon. Dec 31, 2007

Angela, your words are better directed at muslims. not Jews. Or are you still confused over which of the worlds religions still believes in establishing its supremacy over all mankind??

yochanon Mon. Dec 31, 2007

I have recieved a better understanding that there are alot of confused people full of words, pain, and uneducated in Love. Many are just out to cause strife, debate in circles, and not listen or support Jews. First of all, Hitler was "not" a Christian-he murdered Christians- such as Adrich Bon hoffer and thousands of others because they kept Torah. Anyone can call themselves a Jew or Christian, but what is a true Jew/ Christian? Those that obey Ha Shem's Torah by His Spirit. If anyone has been hurt by so called false Christians-please look past them and see who Yeshua is. It is a choice. Faith in Christ does not come by force. There are many Christians who fight for and in the IDF and serve in other support capacities. I still support Torah and Israel. Torah does not teach hate for Christians or anyone supporting Israel's right to exist and their Covenanent with Ha Shem. My prayer is for the peace of Jerusalem and I look forward to the day His servants meet on His Holy Mountain and He rules this world-(Zechariah) We should all do our part: pray for and support Israel's Salvation from her enemies.

Richard Silverstein Tue. Jan 1, 2008

This article, while terrific, leaves out an important part of Eckstein's & IFCJ's agenda, which is to support the settlements & their permanent retention by Israel. A good deal of this money being raised will end up funding municipal services & other programs in the settlements. And as for the "price" Israel has to pay for evangelical support...what do you think these die hard believers will think if Israel ever decides to compromise with the Palestinians & withdraw fr. some or most of the West Bank settlements? Where might all that money go?

angela Sun. Jan 6, 2008

Warren there are many who aspire to have supremacy over the world other than Muslims and if you go back to the onset of the Bu[word deleted]es beginning with the election you may wonder as to who is really is in power in the United States. The "vote" in this country was manipulated by a minority who goals were greater in ambition supported by Arab monies. A lot of words? Confused? I'm sure the Germans said the same thing before they found their own Hitler executing fellow countrymen for having a moral conscience and it was that same moral conscience that provided access to Hitler's demise; by the way Hitler was raised a Roman Catholic and Roman Catholics are considered Christians. My point is that it is not the inter-marriage of Jews or the "sincere" desire, by most Christians, to want closeness with The Holy Land where Christ is expected to return that presents a problem in the middle East but rather the carelessness and lack of wisdom by those who effect change for the love of money. In taking the chance of seeming a simpleton; I believe that in making critical decisions that will affect The Holy Land, many people who believed that The Christ walked the streets of Jerusalem, money should never be the controlling factor for it is true that money is the root of all evil. Like anything created by man; it could be used for good or evil and if the motivating factors are of self interests then I emphatically state it will do harm to all concerned.Let us put our prejudice aside, our selfish interests and merely state these questions "What would GOD want us to do" "What do Scriptures dictate" and "over whom do we wish power over".If I accept your help and I negotiate terms with you that give you power over me; am I not responsible for the decisions I make? And for those decisions how many suffer the consequence of my actions?

angela Sun. Jan 6, 2008

The word [Bush its] was deleted from my last comment..I guess freedom of speech is not so free for it was not profanity nor a racially negative word. When I use the" Bush its" it is to state a political power that used a belief in scriptures to motivate and sustain power. See as Christians or Jews we don't always do the right thing. The fear of homosexual marriage was the motivating factor in the last election and viewed by the world as "58 million stupid people" because it was admitted that going to war was a mistake. Yet with all our concern for homosexual marriages we did allow The Bible and the word GOD to be removed from every aspect of our government as if to say there is no GOD. Constitutional Law is that we cannot deprive anyone to exist freely nor deprive anyone of their rights. The belief in that ideology is what took us to war in the 1st and 2nd. We were directed and controlled to vote a certain way thinking that we were defending scriptures and a way of life. What direction we take as a group of people does matter and if we say we represent a religious group it has greater consequence socially and spiritually; as with the people who make decisions for all of us. We need to be more responsible for our choices and never allow ourselves to be bullied, pushed and shoved by self interest groups that serve no one but themselves. The Holy Land is special to many and we should be careful as to who gains power and for what reasons. Will we stand by and watch The Holy Land be stripped of what it represents to all of us? Where do we draw the line and how far are we willing to go? It seems to me that it is a matter of faith in GOD not whether we are Jew or Gentile or who we should hate.

To Rutberg and others: I am an evangelical Christian, and I am very appalled at the type of paranoia and insults displayed here towards Evangelicals. I can't speak for all Evangelicals, as we are hardly homogeneous. The only reason I donate to the Jewish people in the former Soviet Union (who will not make aliyah) is that I have been reminded that we are indebted to provide for them materially, as they have provided us with the spiritual blessings. I would gues that if you ask ten Christians why they support Israel financially you would get nine different reasons--the "IFCJ" informercials being one of them (ie, call now...a la puppet mentality. For me it is my little way of saying "thank you." Evangelicals are not sitting in some smoke-filled room planning the demise of Israel. We are not united in our support of Israel and we do not think alike. Most of us are actually lukewarm, and there are some of us who think that Israel should be given sanctions by the UN for the treatment of their Palestinian "problem." Others of us just ignore Israel or just don't think about her. However, support for Israel from Evangelicals is starting to cool. I have been so insulted by the paranoia that I want to just help someone in need in some other country who will not look at me as if I have sinister motives or have plans to nuke them. Look at your real enemies, who are manufacturing bombs and reminding Israel that her time for "radiation therapy" will come soon--the same ones who are *not* giving you $50 billion to expand your military, but the ones who are increasing *their* military expenditures to annihilate and terrorize Israel and wipe her off the map.
